National Museums Liverpool presented Error with an exciting brief: design and develop distinctive online brands for NML’s seven museums, while also keeping a standard set of design patterns and development approaches.
Working with NML’s developers, we have developed a design and front-end framework which is shows off each museum in an exciting and different way, while keeping it part of the overall NML brand.
The site is responsive and looks different depending on whether you’re viewing on a computer, tablet or mobile phone: great for when you’re planning your trip, or on the day you’re visiting!
The site was recently awarded the prestigious Webby 2014 Honoree status.
All seven museums are managed under the National Museums Liverpool brand: A well established brand that does a great job at bringing in some excellent exhibitions and events to the city including a Banksy and the biennial John Moores Painting Prize.
Investigating the requirements of the customers (as personas) was the most critical early process. Who they were (family, culture vultures, students); what they wanted to know (what’s on, how to get to the museums, which museum is which). Those requirements filtered into the first initial prototypes – which started with mobile first – working up into a good solid set of functional prototypes.
When we’d built the prototypes we developed a framework and styleguide for reuse by the NML team. The site has won admiration and plaudits at recent conferences, and we’re proud to have been involved!
